3-Ingredient Slow Cooker Buttery Roast Chicken
This incredibly simple slow-cooker chicken recipe uses just three ingredients to create tender, juicy meat and a rich, buttery sauce. The chicken cooks slowly until it is wonderfully tender, while the butter and onion soup mix create a deeply savory flavor.
It is an easy option for a comforting family dinner when you want a roast-chicken-style meal without turning on the oven.
Ingredients
– 1 whole chicken, about 4–5 pounds
– ½ cup unsalted butter, melted
– 2 tablespoons dry onion soup mix
Instructions
1. Prepare the Chicken
Remove the giblets if they are included inside the chicken.
Pat the chicken dry thoroughly with paper towels.
Place the whole chicken breast-side up in a large slow cooker.
2. Add the Butter
Melt the butter and slowly pour it evenly over the chicken.
Try to let some of the melted butter run down the sides of the chicken and collect in the bottom of the slow cooker.
3. Add the Seasoning
Sprinkle the dry onion soup mix evenly over the entire chicken.
Make sure the seasoning is distributed over the breast, thighs, and other exposed areas.
4. Slow Cook
Cover the slow cooker with the lid.
Cook on:
LOW: 6–7 hours
HIGH: 3½–4½ hours
Cooking time can vary depending on the size of the chicken and the slow cooker.
The most important thing is that the thickest part of the thigh reaches 165°F (74°C).
5. Rest the Chicken
Once the chicken is fully cooked and tender, carefully transfer it to a serving platter.
Allow it to rest for about 10 minutes before carving.
This gives the juices time to settle and makes the chicken easier to carve.
6. Serve With the Buttery Juices
Spoon some of the flavorful buttery juices from the slow cooker over the chicken just before serving.
The juices can also be spooned over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
Optional Additions
Although the basic recipe contains only three ingredients, you can add a few extras if you want to change the flavor.
