I Spent Two Nights in an Old Apartment — Then I Noticed These Strange Bumps
At first, the small red bumps didn’t seem like anything serious.
I had spent a couple of nights at a friend’s former apartment, and shortly afterward I noticed several unusual marks on my skin. They were itchy, slightly swollen, and appeared in places that I hadn’t noticed before.
That immediately raised an uncomfortable question:
Could they be bed bug bites?
What Do Bed Bug Bites Look Like?
Bed bug bites can look surprisingly similar to mosquito or flea bites. They may appear as small, red, swollen and itchy bumps.
In some people, the marks appear randomly. In others, several bites may form a line or zigzag pattern. However, the appearance of a bite alone cannot prove that bed bugs are responsible.
Another confusing detail is that bites don’t always appear immediately. Some people don’t develop a noticeable reaction until several days after being bitten, and reactions can sometimes take up to two weeks.
Where Do Bed Bugs Hide?
Bed bugs are tiny, flat, reddish-brown insects that usually hide during the day and come out to feed while people sleep.
They can hide in:
– Mattress seams
– Bed frames and headboards
– Box springs
– Cracks and crevices
– Furniture
– Folds of bedding
– Luggage and clothing
They don’t live on your body like lice. Instead, they hide nearby and come out when they detect a sleeping person.
Don’t Look Only at Your Skin
If you suspect bed bugs, don’t rely exclusively on the bumps.
Check the sleeping area carefully for other clues, including tiny blood spots on bedding, shed skins, insects around mattress seams, or dark spots on nearby furniture.
Finding an actual bed bug or another physical sign of an infestation is much more useful than trying to identify the cause from the bites alone.
