Why do jeans have such small pockets? The explanation

A small pocket… but a big story

To understand this famous mini-pocket, we have to go back to the 19th century, to the era of the first jeans. Created for workers, these trousers had to be sturdy, practical, and suited to a demanding daily life. It was in this context that the renowned company  Levi Strauss & Co.  conceived an ingenious detail. At the time, many men used a pocket watch. A precious object… but fragile.

The birth of the “watch pocket”

To protect the watch, the designers added a small, discreet pocket inside the large front pocket. Its purpose? To keep the watch safe and secure, protected from bumps and scratches. It was even called the " watch pocket ." Simple, practical, and perfectly suited to its time, it quickly became an essential feature of jeans.
