Before heading out on vacation, most people run through the same checklist: unplug appliances, lock doors, take out the trash, and shut off the water. But there’s one small spot that’s often overlooked—and it can cause unpleasant surprises when you return.
The sink.
When a home sits unused for days or weeks, especially in warm weather, plumbing systems don’t get the regular water flow that helps keep them sealed. As water in the drain trap slowly evaporates, it can open a pathway for sewer gases to rise back into the house. At the same time, dark, damp pipes can become an easy entry point for insects.
The result? Musty odors, lingering smells, or even bugs waiting for you when you get home.
