Many people avoid it just by thinking about its appearance or the idea of making it. This is a great shame, however – tongue is not only exceptionally tasty, but also very nutritious. It is considered a delicacy in many cuisines around the world, and for good reason. Why do people avoid beef tongue?

Instructions

1. Cook the Beef Tongue

Place the beef tongue in a large pot. Add the onion, garlic, bay leaves, peppercorns, salt, and enough water to completely cover the tongue.

Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for 2½ to 3½ hours, or until the tongue is fork-tender.

2. Peel the Skin

Remove the tongue from the hot water and let it cool for a few minutes. While it’s still warm, peel off the thick outer skin—it should come off easily.

3. Slice the Tongue

Trim any excess fat from the base, then slice the tongue into thin pieces.

4. Add Flavor

Heat a skillet with butter or olive oil. Add the sliced tongue and cook for 3–5 minutes with your favorite seasonings, such as garlic, paprika, black pepper, thyme, or rosemary, until lightly browned.

5. Serve

Serve with mashed potatoes, roasted vegetables, rice, or fresh bread. Garnish with chopped parsley and enjoy.

Tip: Beef tongue tastes even better the next day and can also be used for tacos, sandwiches, or salads.
