7 Vegetables You Should Always Wash Before Eating

Fresh vegetables are an important part of a healthy diet, but just because a vegetable looks clean doesn’t mean it is free from dirt, bacteria, or other contaminants. During growing, harvesting, transportation, and handling, vegetables can come into contact with soil and microorganisms.

This doesn’t mean you should stop eating raw vegetables. The key is knowing which ones need extra attention and washing them properly before eating.

1. Lettuce 🥬

Lettuce leaves can trap dirt and microorganisms, especially in the folds and between tightly packed leaves. Remove any damaged outer leaves, separate the remaining leaves, and rinse them thoroughly under running water.

2. Spinach and Leafy Greens

Spinach, kale, parsley, cilantro, and other leafy greens have many surfaces where dirt can hide. Because they are often eaten raw, they should be washed carefully before being added to salads, sandwiches, or other meals.

3. Carrots 🥕

Carrots grow underground, so traces of soil can remain on their skin. Wash and scrub them under running water before peeling or cutting them. This helps prevent anything on the outside from being transferred to the inside during preparation.
