Cabbage Leaf Wraps: A Simple Home Remedy for Aching, Swollen Joints

Looking for a simple, inexpensive way to soothe uncomfortable joints at home? Cabbage leaves have been used as a traditional compress for sore and swollen areas, and some clinical research has explored their potential benefits for knee osteoarthritis.

A clinical trial found that applying cabbage leaves to the knee was associated with improvements in pain and knee function among people with osteoarthritis. However, cabbage leaves should be considered a comfort measure, not a cure, and they should not replace medical treatment when joint swelling or pain has an underlying cause.

What You Need

– 2–3 fresh cabbage leaves

– A clean towel

– A soft bandage or loose cloth, if needed

How to Make a Cabbage Leaf Compress

1. Choose fresh leaves

Take a few clean, fresh cabbage leaves. Wash them thoroughly under running water and pat them dry.

2. Soften the leaves

Gently roll a clean bottle or rolling pin over the leaves to slightly crush them. This makes them more flexible and easier to place around the joint.

3. Apply the leaves

Place the leaves directly over the uncomfortable area, such as the knee.

You can gently secure them with a soft cloth or loose bandage. Don’t wrap the area tightly.
