Should You Sleep With Socks On? What Happens to Your Body at Night
Some people can’t imagine getting into bed without wearing socks. Others take them off the moment they get under the covers.
But which habit is actually better for your sleep?
The answer may surprise you.
Wearing Socks May Help You Fall Asleep
Your body naturally changes temperature as you prepare for sleep. Your hands and feet play an important role in releasing heat.
Keeping your feet comfortably warm may help your body regulate its temperature and make it easier to relax before bedtime.
A small study found that warming the feet with socks was associated with falling asleep faster and changes in sleep duration and nighttime awakenings. However, the study was very small, so more research is needed before making strong claims.
In other words, socks may help some people sleep better—but they’re certainly not a guaranteed sleep treatment.
Warm Feet Can Feel More Relaxing
Cold feet can be distracting, especially during colder nights.
If your feet are freezing when you get into bed, putting on a comfortable pair of socks may help you feel warmer and more relaxed.
For some people, that simple feeling of comfort is enough to make bedtime easier.
But Not All Socks Are a Good Choice
The type of socks you wear matters.
Choose socks that are:
– Clean and dry
– Loose enough to avoid restricting circulation
– Comfortable and breathable
– Made from a material that doesn’t irritate your skin
Avoid socks that are extremely tight or leave deep marks around your ankles.
What About Sweaty Feet?
This is where sleeping in socks may become uncomfortable.
If your feet sweat heavily, wearing thick socks all night can trap moisture against the skin. A warm, damp environment can contribute to skin irritation and may encourage fungal problems.
If your feet become sweaty, choose breathable socks or consider sleeping without them.
And, of course, change your socks regularly.
