How to Make a Chair from an Old Sewing Machine Base

Materials You Will Need

An old cast-iron sewing machine base

Wooden boards or thick plywood

Measuring tape

Pencil

Saw

Drill and screws

Sandpaper

Wood stain or varnish

Metal paint (optional)

Foam and fabric (optional, for a cushioned seat)

Step 1: Find and Clean the Old Sewing Machine Base

Start by finding an old sewing machine base, preferably one made from heavy cast iron. Remove the old sewing machine and any unnecessary parts.

Clean the metal carefully to remove dust, grease, and rust. If the frame is very rusty, use a wire brush and sandpaper.

You can repaint the metal frame with black metal paint to give it a fresh and elegant appearance.

Step 2: Prepare the Chair Design

Measure the width and length of the sewing machine base.

Decide how large you want the chair seat to be. The wooden seat should be comfortable and wide enough for an adult.

Draw the design before cutting the wood. You can make:

A simple flat wooden seat

A thicker wooden seat

A padded seat with foam

Wooden armrests

A matching side table using another sewing machine base

Step 3: Cut the Wooden Seat

Cut a strong wooden board according to the measurements of the metal base.

Sand all edges carefully until they are smooth and comfortable.

If you want the chair to look similar to the one in the picture, choose thick natural wood with a warm brown finish.

Step 4: Attach the Seat to the Metal Frame
