Baggage handler issues warning to anyone who ties a ribbon

Never Tie a Ribbon on Your Luggage – Here’s Why You May Want to Think Twice

For many travelers, tying a colorful ribbon around a suitcase has become a simple tradition. The idea seems smart: make your luggage easier to recognize on the baggage carousel and avoid picking up someone else’s bag by mistake.

However, according to airport baggage handlers and travel experts, this popular travel hack may actually create unexpected problems behind the scenes.

Modern airports use highly automated baggage systems designed to move thousands of suitcases every hour. As your luggage travels through conveyor belts, scanners read the baggage tag attached by the airline and automatically direct it to the correct flight. While the process is usually fast and efficient, anything unusual attached to your suitcase can sometimes interfere with the system.

Loose ribbons, strings, bows, or decorative accessories may become caught in conveyor equipment or partially cover important labels. If the barcode cannot be read correctly, your suitcase may need to be removed from the automated system and sorted manually. Although this doesn’t always happen, it can increase the chances of delays and, in some cases, even cause your luggage to miss the flight.

Another common mistake many travelers make is leaving old baggage stickers on their suitcases after previous trips. These outdated labels can confuse airport scanners, making it harder for the system to identify the correct destination for your luggage. Before every trip, it’s a good idea to remove any old airline tags and stickers that are no longer needed.
