What does an Asian giant hornet look like?
The Asian giant hornet is considerably larger than the typical wasps and hornets people encounter around homes.
It has a large orange-yellow head, dark eyes, a powerful body, and distinctive dark and yellow-orange markings on its abdomen. Its large head and jaws are particularly noticeable when viewed from close range.
However, appearance alone is not enough to identify a hornet accurately.
Many different wasp and hornet species can look similar, and incorrectly identifying an insect can lead to unnecessary fear or dangerous attempts to remove it.
What should you do if you see one?
If you encounter a large hornet, the safest approach is simple: keep your distance.
Do not swat at it repeatedly, attempt to catch it, or approach a suspected nest.
If the insect lands nearby, move away calmly rather than provoking it. If you believe you have discovered a nest, keep people and pets away from the area and contact an appropriate professional for identification and removal.
If you are stung, monitor yourself for serious symptoms. Severe swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, weakness, or loss of consciousness can indicate a medical emergency, particularly in someone with a severe allergy to insect venom.
A frightening insect—but not a monster
The Asian giant hornet's reputation has been amplified by its dramatic nickname and frightening appearance. However, it is important to separate genuine risks from sensational claims.
It is not accurate to say that every encounter with one will be deadly, and the insect does not normally hunt humans. Its greatest ecological concern is its ability to prey on honeybees and other insects.
Nevertheless, its powerful sting, large size, defensive behavior, and potential impact on bee colonies make it an insect that should be treated with respect.
The most important rule is simple: never approach an unfamiliar hornet or disturb its nest.
What looks like a fascinating insect from a distance can become a dangerous encounter when someone gets too close.
