Don't Be Misled: Smart Tips for Choosing Safe, High-Quality Meat

Buying fresh meat may seem like a simple task, but making the wrong choice can affect both your health and your family's safety. Attractive packaging and bright colors do not always guarantee freshness. Knowing how to identify high-quality meat can help you avoid spoiled products, reduce the risk of foodborne illnesses, and ensure you're getting the best value for your money.

One of the first things to examine is the color. Fresh beef should have a rich red appearance, while pork is usually light pink, and poultry should have a pale pink color without gray or green patches. Although slight color changes can occur naturally due to exposure to oxygen, unusually dull, dark, or discolored meat may indicate that it is no longer fresh.

The smell is another important clue. Fresh meat should have little to no odor. If you notice a sour, ammonia-like, or unpleasant smell when opening the package, it is best to avoid it. Strong odors are often a sign that bacteria have begun to grow.

Texture also plays a major role. High-quality meat should feel firm and slightly moist, but never sticky or slimy. If your finger leaves a deep mark that doesn't bounce back or the surface feels slippery, the meat may have started to spoil.

Always inspect the packaging before making a purchase. Avoid packages with tears, leaks, or excessive liquid inside. Vacuum-sealed products should remain tightly sealed without air bubbles, and swollen packages may indicate bacterial activity.

Checking the expiration date is essential, but don't rely on it alone. Improper storage during transportation or at the store can reduce freshness even before the expiration date arrives. Buying from trusted butcher shops or reputable supermarkets that maintain proper refrigeration is always a safer choice.
