I came to visit my elderly mother

My mother looked at me.

Then she looked at the officer.

“Almost a year.”

Julian began shouting that she was confused and suffering from memory problems.

But this time, there was evidence.

Bank records.

Photographs.

Medical findings.

Messages.

And most importantly, my mother's own statement.

The investigation uncovered something even worse.

The cabin hadn't simply been sold.

Julian had transferred it for far less than its market value to an associate.

The investment accounts had been emptied gradually.

And the new will had been signed after my mother had already suffered several injuries.

The authorities also discovered that her phone had been deliberately destroyed after she tried calling me.

For weeks, Julian had told everyone that our mother was “forgetful” and “unable to make decisions.”

But the financial records told a completely different story.

The emergency protective order prevented Julian and Chloe from contacting my mother or accessing her money.

My mother spent several days in the hospital while doctors documented her injuries and made sure she was medically stable.

One evening, I sat beside her bed.

She reached for my hand.

“I was so ashamed,” she whispered.

“You have nothing to be ashamed of.”

“I thought nobody would believe me.”

I squeezed her hand.

“I believe you.”
