He had apparently thought about my future long before I realized how much I would need him.
As I read the first few lines, tears began filling my eyes.
My father knew that one day he wouldn’t be there to protect me.
He knew that life might become difficult.
And he had made preparations.
Not just financially.
He had made sure that I would know something important:
I was never alone.
He Had Planned Ahead
The documents the officer brought weren’t meaningless papers.
They were evidence that my father had made arrangements for me.
He had protected certain things for my future.
He had thought about my education, my security, and my ability to stand on my own.
He had anticipated that after his death, circumstances at home might change.
And he had done something about it before he was gone.
The dress I had made from his uniform suddenly felt different.
It wasn’t just a tribute anymore.
It was almost as if my father had found a way to stand beside me on the most important night of my teenage life.
The People Who Had Laughed Were Silent
My stepmother didn’t know what to say.
Neither did my stepsisters.
The laughter was gone.
Nobody was making jokes about my dress anymore.
Because they finally understood something.
I hadn’t worn my father’s uniform because I couldn’t afford a real dress.
I had worn it because it represented the person who had loved me, taught me, and believed in me.
And now the same uniform had become the symbol of something else:
my father’s final promise that I would be okay.
I Went to Prom Anyway
I could have stayed home.
For a moment, I considered it.
But then I looked at the dress.
