The X-Ray That Revealed What Chronic Constipation Had Been Hiding 🩻
Constipation is something many people experience from time to time. A few days of difficulty passing stool may seem like a minor problem, but when constipation becomes persistent, painful, and progressively worse, it should never simply be ignored.
An X-ray circulating online has attracted attention because it appears to show a markedly stool-filled and distended large bowel. It has been shared with a story about a young woman who reportedly suffered from chronic constipation and eventually went more than two weeks without a bowel movement.
The image is striking. The outline of the colon is unusually prominent, illustrating how dramatically the bowel can become distended when large amounts of stool and gas accumulate.
When constipation becomes more than a minor problem
Occasional constipation can happen because of dehydration, dietary changes, lack of physical activity, stress, travel, or certain medications.
But chronic constipation can become much more complicated.
When stool remains in the colon for a prolonged period, it can become dry, hard, and increasingly difficult to pass. In severe cases, a large mass of hardened stool can become trapped. This is known as fecal impaction.
