The Early Warning Signs of Gout You Should Never Ignore
At first glance, a swollen and red knee may look like an ordinary injury or inflammation. But when the swelling appears suddenly and the joint becomes extremely painful, warm, red, and tender, it can sometimes be a sign of gout.
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the body. When uric acid levels become too high, tiny crystals can form inside and around a joint, triggering intense inflammation. Although gout is often associated with the big toe, it can also affect the knees, ankles, feet, wrists, fingers, and elbows.
What does a gout attack feel like?
A gout attack can develop surprisingly quickly, sometimes within just a few hours. The affected joint may become:
– Suddenly very painful
– Swollen and visibly enlarged
– Red or inflamed
– Hot to the touch
– Extremely sensitive, even to light pressure
– Difficult to move normally
The pain can be severe enough to make walking or putting weight on the affected leg difficult.
