A calm that hid a firm decision
Mara didn’t scream, she didn’t cry and she didn’t argue. He smiled, nodded, and said simply, “I understand.” Adrian thought he had won. I didn’t know that I had just lost much more than an argument.
That same night, while he slept in her penthouse, Mara opened each of the spreadsheets Adrian had created for the wedding: guest lists, vendor access, table plans, hotel reservations, and contracts with florists. One by one, he began to remove his name from all records. Then she made three phone calls that would seal the fate of the man who had underestimated her.
The details Adrian didn’t know
What Adrian never understood was the real extent of Mara’s power. His father’s investment firm had saved his company with a bridge loan months earlier. The doors that opened for him in the business and social world belonged, in fact, to the Ellison surname. Even the engagement ring had been purchased with money from her, through her personal jeweler.
