The Secret Behind the Sixty Kilos of Beef

The Secret Behind the Sixty Kilos of Beef

The officers stood at the doorway, completely silent.

For a moment, nobody dared to move.

The flashlight in one officer’s hand trembled slightly as its beam traveled across the dark room.

The smell was overwhelming.

Not the smell of death they had feared when they first forced the door open—but something else. Damp earth. Old wood. Sweat. Fear.

Then they heard it.

A quiet sob.

One officer immediately raised his weapon.

“Who’s there?”

No answer.

Another sob came from somewhere deeper inside the building.

The officers moved forward slowly.

Their shoes scraped against the concrete floor. Every step echoed through the abandoned structure.

Then the flashlight revealed something that made everyone stop.

There were dozens of mattresses on the floor.

Blankets.

Water bottles.

Canned food.

Medicine.

Children’s shoes.

And photographs.

Hundreds of them.

Photographs were pinned to the walls, arranged in rows.

Some showed elderly people.

Some showed young men and women.

Others showed children.

Many of the photographs had dates written underneath them.

Some were weeks old.

Some were years old.

One officer stepped closer to the wall.

His face suddenly changed.

“Wait…”

He grabbed one of the photographs.

“I know this person.”

The others gathered around him.

It was the photograph of a young woman who had been reported missing almost a year earlier.

Nobody had known where she had gone.

Then another officer noticed something.

There were names written underneath several photographs.

And next to some names was a single word:

FOUND.

But beside others, there was nothing.

Lidia stood in the corner, trembling.

Her hands were stained from carrying the heavy meat packages.

Her eyes were red from crying.

The officer turned toward her.

“Lidia… what is this place?”

She didn’t answer.

“Who are these people?”

Still nothing.

Then a small voice came from behind a wooden partition.

“Grandma?”
