Everyone turned.
A little boy stepped into the light.
He looked exhausted and frightened.
Lidia immediately ran toward him and wrapped both arms around him.
The officers stood frozen.
One of them lowered his flashlight.
“Is that your grandson?”
Lidia nodded.
“Yes.”
“But your grandson was reported missing.”
“I know.”
The officer stared at her.
“How long has he been here?”
Lidia looked down.
“Eight months.”
The room went completely silent.
Eight months.

For eight months, she had been buying enormous quantities of meat.
And for eight months, she had been lying to everyone around her.
But the police still couldn’t understand one thing.
“Why sixty kilos?”
Lidia wiped her tears.
“Because there are more people here than you think.”
The officer looked around.
“What do you mean?”
Lidia pointed toward another door.
The police opened it.
Behind it was a narrow passage leading into another room.
