I laughed.
“Well, that’s a very specific face.”
Oliver grinned.
We spent the rest of the morning playing outside.
When Lila finally arrived that afternoon, Oliver ran toward her.
“Mommy!”
She hugged him.
“How was he?”
“Perfect,” I said.
“He wasn’t too much trouble?”
“Not at all.”
Lila smiled.
“Thanks for watching him.”
I nodded.
“Of course.”
She picked up Oliver’s bag.
Then she looked at me.
“Oh, and don’t forget about the note.”
I knew exactly what she meant.
“The forty dollars?”
“Yes. I figured it was easier to just leave it on the counter.”
I looked at her.
“You really want me to pay that?”
She shrugged.
“It was stuff you used while you were here.”
I glanced at Oliver.
He was standing nearby, holding Captain the dinosaur.
I didn’t want him to hear an argument.
So I simply said:
“Okay.”
Lila smiled.
“Great.”
She walked out with Oliver.
I watched them drive away.
Then I went back inside.
I took out a piece of stationery from my desk.
And I started writing.
