Five Teenagers Died After Driving the Wrong Way on a Motorway — A Family Is Still Fighting to Recover
A devastating motorway crash in Ireland has left two families facing completely different forms of heartbreak: five teenagers lost their lives in a horrific collision, while another family is still in hospital fighting to recover from life-changing injuries.
The tragedy happened in the early hours of Sunday, August 16, 2026, on the M9 motorway in County Kildare, near Athy. A BMW carrying five teenage boys was travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway when it collided head-on with a Hyundai carrying four members of a family.
All five teenagers in the BMW died in the crash. They were between 15 and 18 years old.
The five victims were later identified as Joey Carthy, 15, Jack Kennedy, 17, Alex McCarthy, 17, Jeremy O’Brien, 18, and Kamil Pustkowski, 17.
The other vehicle was carrying three women and a seven-year-old boy. They had been travelling toward Dublin Airport because they were due to travel to Britain for a family wedding.
Instead, their journey turned into a devastating fight for survival.
A journey that ended in seconds
The collision happened at around 3 a.m. Emergency services had received reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way along the motorway shortly before the crash.
According to investigators, the BMW was travelling southbound on the northbound carriageway, putting it directly in the path of vehicles travelling normally.
The collision was extremely violent.
The five teenagers inside the BMW died as a result of the crash, while all four occupants of the Hyundai were seriously injured.
Two of the women, who were in their 30s, suffered critical injuries and were taken to Tallaght University Hospital. Another woman, in her 20s, was transported to hospital with serious injuries.
The seven-year-old boy was also seriously injured and required hospital treatment.
The family is still facing a long road to recovery
While the deaths of the five teenagers shocked the local community, the suffering did not end at the crash scene.
The family inside the Hyundai has been left facing a difficult and uncertain recovery.
Their injuries were so serious that their lives were immediately changed. Instead of preparing for a wedding abroad, relatives and friends were suddenly waiting for updates from hospitals and hoping that their loved ones would survive.
Messages of support poured in from people across Ireland, and a fundraising campaign was launched to help the family cope with the enormous financial and emotional burden created by the tragedy.
Hundreds of thousands of euros were donated by members of the public, demonstrating how deeply the crash affected people who had never even met the victims.
Questions surrounding the BMW
Investigators are continuing to examine exactly what happened in the moments leading up to the collision.
Reports indicate that the BMW was believed to have been stolen and that Gardaí had previously attempted to stop it.
The vehicle reportedly travelled the wrong way on the motorway before leaving and later returning to the M9. Police were alerted to its movements, and efforts were made to prevent the vehicle from continuing toward other road users.
But the situation ended in catastrophe.
The investigation is expected to examine who was driving the BMW, why the vehicle was travelling against traffic, and what happened during the period immediately before the crash.
